Running strawberry bush

 
Running strawberry bush (Euonymus obovatus) in a flat woods in NE Tippecanoe County.  This plant is common in this woods.  This is a new plant for me, as I have never seen it anywhere else, although it is a native plant.  Photo taken April 25, 2014.



This photo shows the flowering buds that arise from the leaf axils.

Polyporus squamosus

Dryad's saddle mushroom (Polyporus squamosus).  On a stump near the Wabash River at Americus.  This has recently emerged from the stump and will get much bigger in size if left alone.  At this stage it is edible.

Juneberry in its native habitat

Downy juneberry (Amelanchier arborea) is flowering here in its native Indiana habitat.  This is at Black Rock Barrens Nature Reserve in Warren County.  Photo taken April 22, 2014.

Veratrum woodii is coming up here at Martell Forest.  Photo taken April 20, 2014.

No morels were seen in these woods today.

A large group of Puttyroot Orchid


There are quite a lot of puttyroot orchids (Aplectrum hyemale) in this flat woods in NE Tippecanoe County. This fallen log is surrounded by dozens of puttyroot orchid leaves. April 18, 2014.


Wood duck nests?





I'm not sure about the holes in this ash tree but I think they are wood duck nests.  This is the same woods as in the previous post, NE Tippecanoe County, April 18, 2014.

Ash trees in wet woods

Trunks of ash trees (Fraxinus) in a wet woods.  NE Tippecanoe County, April 18, 2014.  This wet area is transient and is dry in the dry season. Probably the trees are green ash or black ash.

Spring beauty



Spring beauty (Claytonia virginica) is flowering here in Cumberland Park on April 13, 2014. No spring beauty was seen flowering in this park the day before. The only other spring wildflower showing here is bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) which was also seen here the day before. Also, Adams Mill in Carroll County was visited on April 12, 2014 and only the bloodroot was flowering and no other spring wildflower.

Frasera






This new spring growth of Frasera carolinensis is sprouting up on a slope in Ross Hills County Park, April 10, 2014.  The bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) in the park was flowering nicely but no other spring wildflowers were to be seen.
